Life’s a Beach: 5 Safety Tips for Ocean Swimming

Summertime has officially arrived, and that means that it’s time to go swimming. Before you take on ocean swimming, there are some safety tips that you need to know beforehand.

These tips will keep you and others swimming with you safe even if an emergency arises while you’re swimming.

Talk to the Lifeguard

Swimming in a pool isn’t the same as swimming in the ocean. It’s for this reason you need to take some time to talk to the lifeguard on duty.

The lifeguard can fill you in on the current condition of the ocean and let you know if there’s been an increase in wildlife activity recently that you should be concerned about, such as shark attacks.

Don’t Swim Alone

Swimming alone is dangerous for even the most skilled swimmers because your situation can go wrong in the blink of an eye. That’s why you must always swim with a partner.

Preferably someone that can support your weight in the event of an emergency. Swimming with a partner is also useful because you might not notice any issue, but your partner can tell you when it’s time to head back.

This is especially true if you and your partner are attempting open water swimming.

Swim in Safe Zones

Typically, in the ocean, the safe places to swim are marked by buoys. It’s not recommended that swimmers wander past the buoy rope for a variety of reasons, including:

  • The water is too deep
  • Increase in dangerous wildlife
  • Presence of boats
  • Stronger undercurrent

Remember, the safety markers are there to keep you safe, and you shouldn’t swim under or past them.

Know When to Get Out

Sometimes when you’re swimming, you’re going to get the feeling that something just isn’t right. When you feel this, it’s best that you get out and dry off with your BEARZ Outdoor microfiber towels.

For example, if the undercurrent becomes too strong, you should get out instead of fighting it and continuing to swim. It’s better to stay safe when beach swimming than fight against the current.

Always Be Alert

As mentioned, the conditions of the water around you can change before you know it. It’s essential that you remain vigilant to changing conditions to make the right decision when the time comes.

Not paying attention could put you and others swimming with you in danger.

Ocean Swimming Safety 101

When it comes to ocean swimming, there are several safety tips you need to follow. Don’t enter the water without a partner to watch your back while you watch there’s.

If there’s ever a moment where something doesn’t feel right, it’s best to just get out of the water. If you found the information you were searching for in this post, don’t hesitate to continue scrolling by through this section and check out more of our other posts.
