Tom Blumer’s cartoon carries on – all because the stimulus worked
It’s a guilty pleasure, I admit. Reading Tom Blumer at first was work, because I had to in order to keep up with Ohio’s insane hard right blog swamp during the election last year. Then it became a chore, after Barack won. Now it’s just entertainment. It’s the real time display of the conservative right wing mind going kerflooey.
The latest? Yesterday’s news that the GDP grew at 3.5% annually, a number universally understood to be the result of the stimulus package. This does not compute in the fevered mind of Tom Blumer. Modern has noted.
Bizzyblog’s Tom Blumer wants today’s 3Q GDP growth to have an asterisk like people want with Mark McQwire’s HR record.
Fine… put an asterisk on it. And down below write: the 3Q09 GDP growth was only possible due to a tax cut/government spending package introduced by President Obama and passed by a Democratic Congress with no Republican support.
Because that’s what happened.
Kinda the whole point of government stimulus in a recession/depression. In August, I wrote this post arguing that a public option would accomplish the wallet-driven destruction of conservatism, citing Cash for Clunkers. Note the bold.
I have never seen an emergency government program work so well, so fast, to do precisely what it was designed to do, ever. It just put extra shifts on the job at Lordstown, TODAY, for god’s sake. This one provision in the stimulus bill could literally put GDP into positive territory ON ITS OWN. Who do you think is trading in all those clunkers for cleaner more efficient cars? Individuals who have decided that yes, a government program is worth taking advantage of.
The public option will do the same thing – Americans will choose, with their wallets, a government program for their health insurance, in enormous numbers. As Modern notes, their entire political ideology will lie in tatters at their feet. Blumer may spontaneously combust.
What’s great about Blumer’s daily descent into madness is that there is no amount of reality, no matter how hard it smacks him in the face, that can withstand his ignorance. Blumer just keeps slamming into facts that he has to cut down, only to slam into another one. And Blumer won’t stop. Ever. He’ll pray a novena, jerk off to a picture of the pope, jiz all over his statue of St. Lucy, and be back at it again gangbusters tomorrow. Like a cartoon character!
