I will never miss another Republican “response” again. I promise.
Say what you will about David Brooks, but this video is Brooks at his best. It is Brooks’ reaction to Jindal’s speech, literally the minute it was over.
My Jindal experience was through the eyes of others, because right after Barack finished, I got in the car to head to a party. I arrived to pick up my friend to go to the party, and there she was, in front of the TV, her jaw dropped, staring at Bobby Jindal, stunned. This is a person who is not into politics. I said, “come on, let’s go,” and she said, “HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?!?!?!” The speech ended, we went to the party, which was at a bar, and people were talking about Jindal. These are also people who are not political…they’re Tremont hipsters who happened to be in front of a TV at the time.
These “responses” to presidential speeches have been big zeroes for my entire life, but I actually think that Bobby Jindal has made the Republican “response” to any Obama speech going forward must-see-TV for the duration of the Obama presidency. You are guaranteed comedy. Very like Sarah Palin. If the Republican Party is going to put this level of buffoonery on national TV, you simply have to watch.
Thomas Schaller, a political scientist at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said, “Someday, when scholars are trying to fingerpoint the nadir of the post-Bush Republican Party, they may arrive at Jindal’s speech tonight,” he said. “Though it was a tough moment for any Republican to give the opposition response, his speech came across as unserious in content and condescending in its tone.”
It’s only the beginning. Pass the popcorn.
