My Story, Politics

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

I’m gonna admit it.  I’m starting to get real emotional about what’s about to happen to my country.  I’m man enough to admit that I’m gonna be crying some tears on November 4, no matter what happens.   But I’m pretty sure they’re gonna be happy ones.

We’re about to take the biggest step America has ever taken in its long history of healing.  And that’s momentous enough.

But we’re about to do so at a time of great peril for the American dream, of great risk to our national security, and at a moment of seminal decision about the direction of our politics.  Our 400 year history of race is combining with our country’s constant growth and change for the better, in the face of incredible challenge.

And we’re about to do so while overcoming the greatest demons of our democracy, withstanding the most virulent kind of hate, which itself has reduced the party of Lincoln to an inflamed boil on the buttocks of our democracy.  We’re gonna lance that boil, soon, and its bleeding will be just another step in America’s better angels’ return to the forefront of our democracy.

How lucky we are to be alive, and American.  At this moment.  At this time.  How lucky I am to be some Italian-Polish schmuck, dirtied up and beaten down, watching and participating in the one thing that could make any American most proud of his country.  How lucky I am to be able to look at the Statue of Liberty, at a picture of Rosa Parks, at a battlefield in Virginia, at the colors of my flag, and say with a straight face that I was there, and I did my part, and I tried my hardest to live up to the standard so many patriots set before me, for hundreds of years.

Don’t screw it up, folks.  Don’t let up.  Don’t stop.  Keep going.

CNN is reporting that the McCain campaign is giving up on Colorado. How can they win? Obama is sure to win Iowa and New Mexico in addition to the Kerry states. Colorado puts Obama over the top. Methinks the McCain campaign is now focused on preventing an absolute landslide.
