McCain so out of it in Spain-gaffe interview, reporter LHAO

Politics

As usual, Josh Marshall is on it and now has the English only version of the interview in which McCain threatens Spain, doesn’t know where Spain is, and doesn’t know that the interviewer is talking about Spain.

I’ve listened to it, and McCain is on some other planet throughout, even before he gets to his gaffe.  He sounds like a nursing home resident about to fall asleep in his porridge.  McCain seems to fade in and out of coherence.  There is no there there.

The gaffe?   First of all, the reporter goes through Latin American countries one by one, asking him his position.  McCain is clearly on notice of what the reporter is doing.  He names the presidents of Venezuela and Bolivia and Colombia, unprompted, seeming to want to show off.  Then the reporter goes on to Cuba, which again prompts boilerplate from McCain.

Then she says “let’s talk about Spain”.  And it begins.  McCain leaps to speaking about Calderon of Mexico.  She asks for an invitation for Zapatero, McCain “closer relations with our friends, and stand up to those who want to do harm with America.”  She asks if he needs to see if Zapatero is a friend.  More McCain mumbling.

Finally she says “What about Europe, we are talking about Spain.”

McCain thinks she said “what about YOU”, and responds, “what do you mean, what about me?”

Then the reporter again repeats she is talking about Spain.  More mumbling.

At the end, the reporter is so shocked, she loses her train of thought, and laughs.

As did I.
