House Republicans double down on ideology at expense of country

Politics

This crisis had finally begun to sink in with Americans.  The American people were beginning to feel confidence that whatever deal Congress could craft would answer their deepest objections about the Bush Blank Check Bailout.

Enter John McCain.

John McCain went to Washington to save the world, and instead scuttled a deal which, by all accounts, was gaining traction and was almost done.  And why?

Because House Republicans threw an ideological fit when the cameras showed up.

I just watched Barney Frank and Chris Dodd come out of the meeting tonight waving a one-pager that was left after the single House Republican in the room departed precipitously.  The one-pager was the House Republican “plan”, none of which was ever produced before or during the negotiations until tonight.  It included such laughable non-starters as (a) an insurance program Hank Paulson himself said a week ago would not work, (b) a cut in capital gains tax, and (c) LESS regulation.

This one-pager is the result of John McCain’s arrival in DC.  And thus the entire deal, which George W. Bush has said repeatedly is required to rescue the entire economy, which Barack Obama and John McCain have both agreed is unwanted but necessary, is at risk.

Behold, the last death throes of Republicanism.

It is delicious irony that in the face of this unprecedented crisis, which itself has proven, demonstrably, that Republicanism’s basic economic theory is morally, philosophically, and literally bankrupt, House Republicans produce as a “plan” a “document” of…talking points.  At the last minute.  And then walk out in a huff.

It is precisely what Sarah Palin does in an interview.

Doubling down has happened a lot in this election.  With Palin, McCain doubled down on maverickyness and ideology.  House Republicans doubled down on ideology tonight.

We Democrats doubled down on change by not only rejecting the Clinton years, by not only choosing Barack Obama, but by choosing Barack Obama, a black man.  We mean business when we say its time to change America.

Republicans are doubling down on The Stupid.  And boy, do they mean business when it comes to stupid.

And that means this election is going to give Barack Obama a mandate.  The choice between more stupid and failed ideology, and change, could not be starker.

    Shalom Tim,

I think the House Republicans may end up being the heroes here because they, like Marcy Kaptur and quiet a few others, aren’t buying the precipice bull shit.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff
