Press security was limited at Berea Obama event
Wed, Aug 6, 2008
I’ve gotten some comments about the John Quinn video from yesterday’s Barack Obama Berea event along the lines of, hey, it wasn’t that big a deal. Well, of course it wasn’t. But given the lax security for press at the Berea event, there’s a reason the entire media riser got nervous.
There were no metal detectors at the press entrance to the Baldwin Wallace Recreation Center except for one agent holding a handheld metal detector which he waved over the bodies of the entrants. In addition, bags did not go through a thorough search. My bag was opened and looked through, my laptop was opened, but if something in my bag were a weapon designed as a camera or a lens, no one would have found it.
I think every press person wonders about this at every presidential event. There are a lot of people carrying around a lot of equipment in the media area at a presidential event. John Quinn had a bag of lenses and cameras. If he was subject to the same search everyone else was going into the press area, well….it’s no surprise this guy created some nervousness in press pen.

Good job. I enjoyed your video and interview. They really need to beef up the security at these things. Doesn’t Obama have strong secret service? I can’t see how security was lax if that was the case.
