My Obama veep thoughts
Mon, Aug 11, 2008
I haven’t been jonesin’ to write about this much, largely because it’s not something that occupies my mind, and because I tend not to just follow along whatever issue the talking heads are jabbering about, over which no one has any influence other than Barack Obama. But I guess I should write something.
I think Barack needs to re-inforce his own change message with the pick. I don’t think any electoral calculus makes sense, unless it delivers more than one state. So my perfect pick would be one that expands the base, reaches out to a big voting block, and fits with Barack’s own message.
Which is why I keep coming back to Bill Richardson. The Hispanic vote isn’t limited to one state, isn’t even limited to one swing state, and is there for the locking up. Richardson’s foreign policy experience is great, and he sure isn’t gonna outshine Barack. It’s a bit risky to put a black man and a Hispanic on the same ticket, but hey, we’ve doubled down on change already, might as well go all in. Plus, we’d lock up the Hispanic vote for a generation, perhaps longer, a demographic that is largely shopping around for a political home, and in many ways is susceptible to Republican messaging.
I think Tim Kaine makes sense, especially since he speaks fluent Spanish, and expands the battleground to Virginia, but Richardson is a more intriguing pick for me. I have written before about Jane Harman as a surprise pick, largely for her ability to calm down Hillary supporters, but the more I think about it, the more I realize she doesn’t do much other than that. Evan Bayh is the biggest snoozer of all time, and grabbing Indiana can happen without him.
So if I had my druthers, I’d take Bill Richardson.

I don’t like Richardson. I thought he looked pretty lame this week on the Sunday shows, and he wasn’t very impressive during the campaign.
We’re seeing that Obama is doing very well with Hispanics, so I don’t think he needs Richardson.
I like Bayh or Biden. Bayh might put Indiana over the top, which practically ensures a win for Obama, while Biden is the perfect attack dog against the McCain slime machine.
