Modern must not be reading the PD. After all, according to the PD, McCain isn’t even running a negative campaign, let alone a racist one.

 Not only is it racist, but it dog-whistles the religious demogogery as well.  Again, the McCain camp refers to Obama codely as “The One”– i.e., the Anti-Christ, as if a bunch of white, Southern Baptist Republicans didn’t already view the concept of an African-American President as the “End of Times” already.

I’m fairly resigned to the fact that McCain’s campaign is going to get more racist, more quickly, than any of us could have imagined.  But I think I finally understand why.

After the Dem convention, and the bounce that Barack will likely get out of it, there will be very little that John McCain can do to win the election.  That’s why we are seeing this vile stuff so early, so often.  McCain has to throw it all against the wall before voters actually come to the conclusion themselves that Barack is, in fact, an American, that he is, in fact, safe, and that he is, in fact, going to make a great president.

McCain can’t afford to wait for the Democratic convention to seal that deal.  So he has to kaibosh that deal before it happens.  And if you look at Gallup tracking today, he ain’t puttin’ the kaibosh on it just yet – 5 point spread today.  

So I’m going to enjoy sitting back and watching John McCain trash his own reputation, while simultaneously pulling the safety net out from every other Republican in the country, by reducing himself to the most repulsive campaign in modern political history.  It was always a risky strategy to go this deep into the gutter, which is why Hillary didn’t jump in feet first.  She did, however, stick her toe in the water, and she and her husband, and the people around them, will spend the rest of their lives trying to undo the damage they did to themselves.

John McCain won’t have that luxury.
