Glenn Reynolds is a liar - UPDATE - spoke to UT Dean
UPDATE - Just got off the phone with Doug Blaze, Dean of UT Law School. He told me that the school has policies on this topic and relies on professors for compliance, but does not monitor or double check. I’m hoping that he will monitor a little more closely during this campaign.
Glenn Reynolds likes to strike this ultra-libertarian pose, non-Republican, above it all, intelligentsia conservatism. In fact, here’s an email from Glenn, to me, stating just that.
I’m not a Republican.
He even once emailed me that he considers himself leftist.
If it weren’t for the war, I would be considered a quirky leftist.
Well, if you read Instapundit at all during this election, you know that’s a lie.
Flat out, bald-faced lie.
Let’s look at Reynolds post just from THIS MORNING.
7.10 AM - Claims Hillary drama continues. (that’s his second post of the morning)
7.20 AM - Claims Obama is creating swiftboat groups out of whole cloth.
8.11 AM - Claims Ayers swift-boating ad is “fair“, and that Obama efforts to fight it violate free speech.
8.31 AM - Cites Tyra Banks and celebrity meme “dooming” Obama.
8.51 AM - Mocks Obama stage at Invesco field.
8.57 AM - Claims Dems peeling away from Obama, and mocks somemore.
9.16 AM - Gins up protestors in Denver.
9.27 AM - Calls Democrats traitors to country.
9.36 AM - Back to Ayers. (that only took less than 2 hours!)
These are Glenn Reynolds’ posts from the first 2.5 HOURS OF TODAY ALONE. Of course he sprinkles in a few posts about non-political hooey, but in the above noted 9 posts, there is no mistaking Reynolds’ partisanship.
If you are a “quirky leftist”, or “not a Republican”, this isn’t how you’d blog. However, if the first thing you did in the morning was check your email for whatever garbage the RNC and the McCain campaign want you to parrot, and then proceed to literally regurgitate it INSTANTANEOUSLY, well….that’s what Glenn Reynolds’ blog looks like.
It also doesn’t look very much like the work of a law professor at the University of Tennessee. It looks like the hackery of some twitching Karl Rove wannabe wingnut like Matt Naugle. Which leads me to this question.
What are the rules for partisan activity from a non-profit instutition as it applies to professors? Reynolds is clearly, proof coming from his own blogposts, campaigning against Barack Obama and for John McCain. This isn’t even debatable. Glenn may debate it, but we already know he’s dishonest.
Here’s what the IRS says about 501(c)(3) non-profits and political activity.
voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention.
Looks to me like Glenn is clearly violating that if he is doing any of this political activity from the campus of UT. If he were smart, he wouldn’t be doing any of this from UT’s campus. But Glenn isn’t smart enough to have even a colorable claim of non-partisanship in his blog anymore, so who knows. I have placed a call to UT’s dean and director of development. Awaiting a response.

Nice.
It is good to remind everyone that Putz fancies himself such a libertarian, anti-big gubmint crusader, all while feeding himself off off the public teat.

Apparently the Dean does not factcheck Putz’s ass.
Shame.

Ummm… jeezus. I think Putz can be a douche, but, um, calling the dean to try to fuck with him. Way, way bigger douchy thing to do. Makes me sympathetic to his often-repeated claim that lefties are as big a threat to freedom as righties. I’d rather have douches like putz than university administrators reading what their employees are blogging about.

my conversation with the dean was totally fair. reynolds works at a non-profit institution subsidized by taxpayer dollars. if he is doing a single iota of this from work, he is breaking federal tax law, in support of john mccain.
that is wrong. it is bullshit. and putz’s employer needs to know about it.
period.

Many closet wingnuts claim libertarianism.

He really wants a high level gov’t appointment, and sucks like crazy on the Repubs hoping to achieve it. He had his nose half way up Bill Frist’s ass. He’s hopeless.

Considering how well known Reynolds is and how long he’s been blogging? If the Dean wasn’t aware of it, that would be pretty surprising. He actually puts on his “FAQ’s for Journalists Page”:
What about your academic work? Do your colleagues like InstaPundit?
For the most part, to the extent that they’re aware of it, they seem to like it. People occasionally email me things that they think will be good for InstaPundit, or comment that they like a particular post. My Dean has been very supportive.

I’m trying to figure out what kind of fantastic distortion of space and time you think has occurred, where thrust into some alternate universe, you’d imagine that everyone at UT isn’t already aware that a member of their staff is one of the most popular bloggers in existance.
It’s 2008 dude, not 1996. The intertubes ain’t a big secret. I wouldn’t stop to point this out ordinarily, but you are after all going with “OMG maybe they don’t know who he is” + “I’m telling on you” + “I pay your salary”. Honestly.
