Finally, Barack going on vacation - let’s meet his grandmother
Thu, Aug 7, 2008
Obama is expected to be traveling with his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters. His sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, live in the Islands.
Barack’s grandma helped raise him. She’s also white. I think an event at the end of the vacation where we get to meet Barack’s grandma would be fantastic. According to Wikipedia…
Both Madelyn and Stanley Dunham are descended from European colonists, mostly from England, who settled in the American colonies in the 17th and 18th century. The most recent native European ancestor is Stanley’s great grandfather, Falmouth Kearney, an Irish farmer, who immigrated from County Offaly, Ireland during the Great Irish Famine and resettled in Tipton County, Indiana. Falmouth Kearney’s youngest daughter, Mary Ann (Kearney) Dunham, is Stanley Dunham’s paternal grandmother.[5]. Stanley Dunham is a seventh cousin, once removed, of Vice-President Dick Cheney and a seventh cousin, twice removed, of President Harry S Truman through their common ancestor, Mareen Duvall, a wealthy French Huguenot merchant who immigrated to Maryland in the 1650s.[6].
Talk about a blue blood. Barack’s grandma is practically a Daughter of the American Revolution. And cute, too!
Dunham lives today in the same small highrise apartment where she raised Obama. She is an avid bridge player, but mostly stays at home in her apartment “listening to books on tape and watching her grandson on CNN every day.” Obama and his half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng refer to Dunham as “Toot” — short for “tutu,” the Hawaiian word for grandparent.
I have an Aunt Tootie. She’s a great aunt, actually, one of the countless daughters of my Italian great grandfather, her name is Carmella Russo, now O’Toole, she married an Irishman. But no one knows how she got the name Tootie. It fits, so it stuck.
I wanna meet Toot.
