Why Ohio Republican bloggers are borderline psychotic, and why it matters
Tue, Jul 29, 2008
The real problem with the leaders of the Republican blogosphere in Ohio is pretty simple. They have precisely zero self-awareness.
They are never aware of when they are being racist bigots. They are never aware of when they are making fools of themselves. And they are never aware that their racist, bigoted, foolish ideas are, in fact, racist, bigoted, and foolish.
Never.
This little dustup with Matt Hurley’s Weapons of Mass Discussion is a perfect example. We in the Ohio leftysphere are known for our spats, and our big mouths, too. But for the most part (Hickmania excepted), we are well aware of where lines of appropriateness are, aware of when we make asses of ourselves, capable of self-deprecation, and aware of ourselves, period.
These guys in the Ohio Republican blogosphere - and make no mistake, these people are REPUBLICANS - have a borderline psychotic lack of self-awareness. When they think they are funny, they are inappropriate. When they think they are writing cogent analysis, they are writing bigotry and hate.
This spiraled into self-parody when the king of oblivious non-self-awareness Matt Naugle decided to take offense at the video Matt Hurley shot, posted, and pulled. Now, Mark, the star of the “video” has posted another utterly non-self-aware blabfest he calls an “apology.”
Let me be clear. I am not apologizing for doing the show or trying something new. I am apologizing for anyone who took offense. While I may not be proud of the reaction, I am proud of the work that was done. The show looked better than I thought it ever could, and we had a great time making it. I will not apologize for what we learned in video work or for us trying to expand our horizons.
First of all, here’s the video. You decide how proud they should be of the “the work that was done.”
Why does this matter?
Because these guys, and their ilk, GET INVITED ONTO TV AND RADIO FOR THEIR COMMENT. Which brings me to this little nugget from Mark.
Matt and I are not representing the Republican party, no matter what pamphleteers of stupidity or Columbus Tabloid reporters might say. We simply put up what we think is interesting or something that strikes a nerve.
These guys are the Republican Party as sure as Matt Naugle is. They take Republican crap out of their inboxes, which are filled by every Republican operative in the state, from Bob Bennett on down, and they parrot it exactly. They are the root and branch of the Republican Party, and thanks to the blogosphere, they are the face of the Republican Party, too.
If I were Matt Hurley and his friend Mark, I’d take a long look in the mirror and decide just how much of a damn fool I want to make of myself. Because right now, at this moment, in this election, we know the stakes. You may be playing a game, but we ain’t playin’ a game here. The rest of us plan to watch every single move you people make and turn your little “mistakes” into the reality of your political party.
Because it IS the reality of the Republican Party.
