Uppity Negro - the new race baiting

Wed, Jul 30, 2008

Media, Politics

The race-baiting code words of the pathologically power obsessed conservative “movement” have been with us for years.  The “states rights”, the “quotas”, all intended to invoke an imagery in the knuckledragging white underclass, intended to stoke them up, intended to rev up the base.  It works.  We saw that in Ohio on March 4, thanks to Hillary Clinton.

And now, the newest of the code words is taking hold.  Barack Obama is “arrogant”, “presumptious,” etc.  When the target audience hears these words, it rings loud and clear.   He’s a god damned uppity Negro.  Josh Marshall is noticing.

I note with interest today, John McCain’s new tactic of associating Barack Obama with oversexed and/or promiscuous young white women…But what I’m most interested in today is the new meme the McCain campaign has been pushing for the last few weeks that Obama is presumptuous, arrogant and well … just a bit uppity. Ron Fournier picked the ball up early in his reporting for the AP. And John King was pushing it over the weekend on CNN. Is it arrogant or above Obama’s station for him to meet with the Chairman of the Federal Reserve? If I’m not mistaken he is a sitting United States senator and also the presidential candidate of the Democratic party. Such meetings are actually the norm.

So please keep an eye out for references to Obama’s presumptuousness, arrogance, etc., from John King and other reporters. Let us know when you see them and send us in examples — in text or video. McCain gets to run the campaign he wants. Remember, he hired the operative who put together the Ford/Bimbo ad. But I want to keep tabs on which reporters are helping him retail the message.

Good.  We all need to keep track.

Here in the Ohiosphere, there was a real lack of interest in bringing the code words to light during the primary, largely because Hillary Clinton was the one using them.  Now that we have a Republican using them, and Ohio righty bloggers giddily jumping on the bandwagon, we in the lefty Ohiosphere need to be on top of this.

Why?

Repeat after me.

We are trying.

To elect.

A black man.

President of the United States.

This was always, ALWAYS, going to be an uphill struggle.  In this Democratic year, we Democrats decided to double down on change, not only were we going to change the White House, the government, the direction of our country.  We were going to kill a few historic demons along the way.  And we raised the bet.  And that feels real, real good.

This last round, these last 90 or so days, we are going to be fighting forces which this country has never, EVER been able to overcome.  Forces that kept men in chains for 250 years.  Forces that hung people from trees.  Forces that not even Martin Luther King could overcome in his lifetime, but CAN, WILL, and HAS overcome in spirit.  We need to make that happen in reality this year.  This time.

And unless we all pay attention to the insidious tapping of these forces for evil, the evil will win.

Barack Obama takes a risk with his own life, every single day.  Every time Barack steps out into public, he is facing this history.  The least we can do is watch his back with our blogs.

I’m all for the recognition of historical socio-economic taglines used throughout this Presidential election, but doesn’t it work both ways? I mean for everytime the McCain ticket evokes an image of an “Uppity Negro”, doesn’t the Democratic side force feed the “Crotchety (<- is this a word LOL) Old White Man” image? I am, by no means, a McCain supporter (I am yet undecided), but fair is fair and the images used to stereotype each candidate are not only two-sided….but also largely honest, don’t you???
