One day into the media’s reaction to the New Yorker Cover, and once again, the MSM establishment is completely missing the mark.  The entirety of the pundit class is focusing on the cartoon itself.  Whether it is offensive, or racist, or most hilariously, effective satire.  Who cares if this cartoon is effective satire?  

The real issue of this magazine cover, which all the commentary dances around, is that it is even possible at all.  That such an image is so familiar, ALREADY, without ever having been drawn.  That such an image is not seen as satire at all, but as known TRUTH, by a huge section of the electorate, and known HATE by the rest.  

I watched Anderson Cooper last night on CNN, and left a comment on his blog, who the hell knows if anyone reads it, but the salient point is this.

CNN, and the media environment CNN plays in, has a responsibility to the truth.  What a profound indictment of your profession that this late in the election of the President of the United States of America, such a large portion of the electorate literally believes the most ridiculously absurd falsities displayed in that cover.  

When an anonymous email smear campaign is able to enter the mainstream of the electorate and TRUMP the entire coverage of the MSM with a lie, that means the MSM is failing in it’s basic obligation to the truth.  And this is not some oversight.  Oh, no.  

During the primary, when these smears and lies were taking hold, Hillary Clinton’s campaign, her supporters, her sycophantic bloggers (especially the ones in Ohio, you know who you people are) were silently, and quite happily, benefiting from them.  The Clinton camp certainly didn’t want to spread them themselves, or engage them at all.  It was radioactive, but helpful.

But an MSM establishment so tied at the hip to Hillary was not about to dig into it.  Half these reporters owe their entire careers to the Clintons, and not one of them was about to insert into that primary any discussion of race that would come even close to what the New Yorker has done.  

So the MSM was basically frozen in place on the issue of the lies.  They sat on it.  They all certainly received the emails at some point (hell, even I have some of them now).  How difficult is it to put a hard core team on this issue and find out where these emails are coming from?  Not difficult at all.  But they didn’t want to do it.  And frankly, if it weren’t for the New Yorker, they wouldn’t do it now.  

After the New Yorker cover, they have no choice but to talk about it.  They have to talk about the polls which say that 39% of the voters still believe Barack Obama was raised in a madrassa, 26% believe he was raised a muslim, 12% think he is a practicing muslim, and 12% think he swore his oath on the Koran, in a country where the press has anointed itself the Fourth Estate Beholden Only To The Truth.   FAIL.  

But will they talk about the lies themselves, investigate them, and tell the truth for once?  Or will they just dance around it, as they have done in the last 24 hours?  I’m not holding my breath, but it would be nice to have a little journalism practiced for once in this stupid campaign.
