Obama timeline on Iraq - plus Obama statement on FISA

Politics

So thanks to the overheated response from the left on the myriad of non-issues which Barack Obama has decided to talk about lately to the left’s chagrin, an overheated response to one word - “refine” - blew up and blew down today.

Every word any future president will utter gets over-scrutinized, yes.  And with Barack, who is already being treated as president by the media, it’s going to get hotter.  So it’s no surprise to me that when Barack uses the word “refine” to describe his Iraq withdrawal timetable, especially in the context of taking advice and guidance from the military to do said “refining”, that’s gonna send folks into a frenzy.

But for God’s sake, folks, you really need to step away from the TV and the computer for a while.  Thank God there’s a holiday weekend ahead.  It would be the height of irresponsibility for a candidate for president, let alone an actual one, to refuse to “refine” his position on such a massive endeavor as withdrawal from Iraq.  See Bush, George W.  Especially given that said withdrawal will also be in the context, should Barack become president, of a build up in Afghanistan.  You just can’t do something like this on a rigid schedule.  There needs to be flexibility.

And that’s why I like this statement from Barack on FISA.

Democracy cannot exist without strong differences. And going forward, some of you may decide that my FISA position is a deal breaker. That’s ok. But I think it is worth pointing out that our agreement on the vast majority of issues that matter outweighs the differences we may have. After all, the choice in this election could not be clearer.

The last week of hyperventilation on Barack’s non-leftist campaigning certainly brought this Iraq non-episode on, and probably aggravated it.  But once again, Barack is proving that he’s intent on winning, and winning big, so that his Iraq policy, and all the others, have a mandate from the American people.  And again, that’s a great thing.
