MSNBC is covering the news conference from the police in knoxville.  Police say the shooter, Jim Adkisson, targeted liberals in general, as well as gays.  He left a four page manifesto detailing his “hatred of the liberal movement”.  That the liberal movement was getting more jobs than him.  That liberals and “other groups” were specifically listed in the manifesto.  

The police are investigating it as a hate crime.  The shooter chose the church specifically.
