It’s official. The 2008 campaign is the last battle of the 60’s

Politics

I’ve been saying this since I decided to support Barack Obama in December.  When Barack becomes president, it will thankfully, mercifully, be the end of the constant argument of the 1960’s.  And John McCain helpfully proves my piont, with an ad that seeks to divide America, yet again, along those lines, with a disdainful pronouncement against the “summer of love”, vs. getting shot down in a plane.

This battle used to fought by proxy, forcing Americans into one camp or the other with a series of cultural war maneuvers that boiled down to arguments over genitalia.  Now, McCain just goes right at it.  See those hippies?  Didn’t you hate how much they got laid and you didn’t?  See those grainy Vietnam War images?  See how much of a hero I am?

Given that this will literally be the ONLY information we hear from the McCain campaign about McCain’s military record until McCain signs SF-180 to release his military records, I’m not surprised that this is the narrative the last presidential campaign of the 1960’s era seeks to proclaim.  What’s surprising is that they actually do boil it down to the cliche in one of their first ads.  Hippies vs. Military Hero.  No more beating around the…ahem…..bush.

It’s not going to work.  It will be defeated.  Resoundingly.  And with it, the endless argument over genitalia that has dominated our politics since that era.

Thank.  God.

Honestly, I think we’ll be having elections that are about the 1960s until most of the baby boomers have died off.
