Five days of news vs. 400 years

Politics

So my email box is getting filled with “concern” about the horrifyingly game-changing 5 days of news about how Barack Obama is selling out.  Literally 5 days.  And some of it is coming from folks who should know better than to piss all over our nominee to a big-mouthed blogger hungry for publicity who has been supporting Barack since December.  This comment from Jeff Hess is the one thing I’ve heard in these longest, most horrifying 5 days in the history of all that is dear and sacred to America, that deserves the slightest bit of engagement.

There has to be something beyond winning the White House. If Sen. Obama becomes a difference that makes no difference, then where are we?

Separation of Church and State is an important issue for me.

What I don’t understand is why he’s bothered to raise this at all. To pander to christianists? That make no sense. I don’t see how he wins votes by making the funding of faith-based organizations an issue.

What issue could Obama give away that would bother you?

It comes as no surprise to anyone who’s read my numerous blogs in the last 4 years that I’m not a single issue guy, or a double issue guy, or any number of issues guy, which taken together not one single swing voter in Ohio would give half a shit about.  I’m a big picture guy.  Yes, I care about church and state, and guns, and privacy, and the 4th amendment, and all those things that now have so many people thinking Barack is some kind of bait and switch panderer.

But I care way more about what happens after November.  Does anyone really think that Barack Obama in the White House will make “no difference”?  Compared to John McCain?  Does anyone really think that handing the wingnuts a couple stupid, minor, moronic bones on a silver platter is going to eviscerate the power that a Democratic president, with a Democratic Congress, after a landslide election, will be able to wield for the good of our country?

I can’t wait to hear these people whine when it becomes clear that Barack actually does want to go after Al Queda in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  When it becomes clear that the troops leaving Iraq, as he has promised will happen, go to Afghanistan, as every military commander in the region is now demanding.  When it becomes clear that President Obama is serious about getting Bin Laden, finally, for good.  What are these people gonna do then, hit refresh on DailyKos until their fingers bleed?

Barack Obama is trying to be the first black president in this country’s history.  That weight, on this man’s shoulders, makes whatever hissy fit a bunch of bloggers want to throw look like a mosquito bite on the ass of a horse.  Barack is fighting the legacy of the last 8 years of political demonization, the last 20 years of the GOP’s cultural war, the last 40 years since blacks got the right to vote, the last 145 years since slaves were freed, and the last 400 years since the first slave was dragged onto this land in chains.

That’s the road Barack Obama walks today.

If Barack Obama needs to tell AT&T that they get a pass this time for FISA, or tell Jethro that he can have his stupid gun collection, or tell Grannie Clampett at the Church of World Harvesting of Horseshit that she can have her little Coats For Kids program funded, in order to move further down that road, then go right ahead Barack.  Let me hold your jacket.

But if literally 5 days of Barack Obama campaigning away from his base, to broaden his base, is going to make some people cry on their keyboards, then go right ahead and do so without me.  Like I care.

I suspect that in 10 days, or 20 days, or 100 days, Barack will make you all feel pretty damn petty.  I’ll be here helping the most important black man in this country’s history get where he, and our country, needs to be.

It’s from about a month ago, and I posted it on my blog a few weeks ago, but if you watch it, and listen closely, I think you get a sense for how important winning is to this man (to all of us). I think he’s terrified of letting down the people that have put their faith in him, and I’m with you…compromise on the small stuff, but keep your eyes on the prize. Don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees.

Is there any doubt that an Obama Presidency would be one of the most Progressive Administrations of our lifetime? Sometimes we need to take a step or two back to be able to leap forward. It seems like every day he becomes a sharper and sharper politician. Is he going to let us down from time to time? Sure…he’s human. He can’t represent everything to everyone, but the sum of his character makes him easily the greatest candidate we’ve ever seen.

It’s hilarious to me that everytime McBush and the neo-cons try to apply the same old bullshit talking points to Obama, he dodges them. He refuses to allow them to play games with him. His campaign has been as brilliant as McBush’s has been dense to this point. I’m loving every minute of it.

This post had me nodding in agreement and laughing at the same time. I’ve tired of reading about FISA and the repeated diaries all over the blogosphere about it. I’m not sure how productive it is, but that’s not my issue of choice, so I guess I’ll never know.
