Did Josh Mandel tell anyone else he joined the Marines because it would help him politically?

Politics

I must admit, I’ve been watching Josh Mandel’s political career since he was president of the Ohio State USG.  And during that period, I tried very hard to convince him of 3 things.

First, I gave him my “you don’t want to go to law school” speech.  Those of you who have gone to law school know this speech, because you probably give one form of it or another to anyone you know who’s applying to law school, as I have done with countless potential law students.  Josh went to law school, and lucky for him, he’ll never have to practice law, because now he’s a politician.

Second, I tried to convince Josh Mandel that he is, in fact, a Democrat.  When I was hangin’ with Josh, there wasn’t a single issue on which he agreed with the Republican Party.  Not one.  But Josh kept telling me it was easier to run on the GOP side, because no one was in line ahead of him.  In Cuyahoga County Democratic Politics, Josh Mandel would have to get in line behind the likes of Armand Budish and wait for 20 years – in the Cuyahoga County GOP, Josh Mandel can run, run run!

Which brings me to my third conversation topic with Josh Mandel.  I tried to convince him not to join the Marines.  At the time, it appeared that joining the Marines would land you in a firefight and might get you killed in Iraq.  Josh Mandel told me, repeatedly, that joining the Marines was politically helpful, especially in the GOP.  And that’s why he did it.

Of course, Josh did go to Iraq, and did fight in Fallujah, and I’m sure at the time he was praying to Yahweh to get his ass outta there alive so he could cash in on all this hero stuff.  Yahweh got Josh outta there alive.  And now Josh is cashing in.

Anyone else hear this political justification for joining the military from Josh Mandel?

I actually had heard this story. The GOP made this same assertion (which was a lie) against Hackett. Funny how it ends up being true with one of theirs. I guess having a GOPer caucus with the Dems in the statehouse won’t be so bad (if what you say about his convictions are true).
