Wow.  I mean, just wow.

The German magazine “Der Spiegel” reported that Obama’s “planned European tour might make a major whistlestop in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The candidate’s schedule isn’t set, but a Berlin appearance before the end of July looks likely.”

Let me tell you something.  There could be TENS OF THOUSANDS of people at that speech.  No American is more popular in Europe right now than Barack Obama.  Barack is going to the site of two of the most famous speeches in American presidential history - JFK’s “I am a Berliner” speech, and Reagan’s “tear down this wall”.  That Reagan moment is, honestly, one of my proudest moments as an American.  I’m a Democrat, and never voted Republican in my life, but to see an American president go to the Iron Curtain itself and tell the Soviets just what he thought was truly awe-inspiring.

Because the Brandenburg Gate isn’t just the scene of that speech.  It’s the scene of the final destruction of Nazism.   American B-17’s flew over that gate to bring food to starving West Berliners during the Berlin airlift.  It’s the scene of German patriots dying to cross the barbed wire to reach the ideals that we as Americans held out to them like a beacon.  It’s the scene of the end of the Cold War, where young radicals ignored the armed guards all around them to take that wall down themselves, with their bare hands.  It will now be the scene of yet another goosebump moment for Barack Obama.

I’ve said before that Obama is our Reagan, but better.  He seems teflon, he reaches across the political spectrum, both for support and ideas, and he could lead this country with a mandate the likes of which we haven’t seen since Reagan.  But going to Reagan’s (arguably) most memorable moment, both figuratively and literally, is pretty.  Damn.  Ballsy.  

And in that setting, at that spot, with that crowd, Barack is pretty much guaranteed to hit a grand slam home run.  The pictures alone will be incredible.   Kinda like these.
