LOL… Worst of all they’re “talking” footnotes. I’d hate to see some of the worst and most common traits in legal writing become commonplace in blogging.
There’s a novel called House of Leaves that has extensive footnotes. Eventually they overwhelm the “main” narrative and go on for pages and pages. Even the footnotes have footnotes.
Give David Foster Wallace a read…that dude love him some footnotes. I’d pass on his McCain article (not b/c it’s not well written, but b/c it might distract us from the cause), but I would take a look at his NYT piece about Roger Federer (which makes sense since Wimbledon just got under way, and Rog is going for 6 in a row (i think)). You’ll definitely want to check out his essay on the porn industry - the AVN awards in particular - hilarious stuff (the first and last can be found in a collection of his essays called “Consider the Lobster”). You can probably just google the Federer essay.
