The final death throes of the Clinton era
Wed, Jun 4, 2008
We’ve all seen the movies where the evil monster keeps not dying. It grabs at the hero, pauses for what appears may be it’s final breath, but then comes to life in a thrashing last attempt, pushing the hero to his limit. Then the hero applies the coup de grace, and the monster finally dies with a twitching uncontrolled muscular reaction. Maybe there’s a piece of it lying on the floor, flopping about.
Then it’s over.
This absurd attempt by Hillary Clinton to muscle her way onto the ticket, in a 24 hour period that should be filled with universal awe that a black man is our nominee, is this final seen in our party’s monster movie. The Clinton era is twitching reactively as death approaches, its final attempt at life a pathetic flailing at the feet of its new master.
The campaign that Barack Obama has run, entirely positive, never negative, was a risky choice. It takes courage and discipline to avoid falling to the siren song of the politics of the past, while trying to create a politics of the future. One road leads to the loss of one’s soul, the other leads to a new day.
Barack has done this with grace, dignity, and yet, unyielding determination. The Clinton era, with its very existence dependent on that old politics, wouldn’t ever have died willingly, and isn’t doing so now. It may take one more stroke to kill it off entirely, but die it shall.
Hillary’s final act in her era’s battle for survival could have been a moment of great courage for her, of great leadership. Instead, she will find that her era is so gone, such history already, that one last twitch at Barack Obama’s ankles is all that’s left now. What a way for an era to end.
And what a way for a political career to be defined.
