Obama supports FISA compromise, lefties freak

I fully support the prevailing sentiment in the lefty blogosphere that retroactive telecom immunity for phone companies who cooperated with the Bush administration on their illegal wiretapping is an outrage. I happen to think that telecom immunity for acting illegally around FISA is yet another example of the Dickensian nature of today’s America, wherein the super powerful get literally whatever they want, whenever they want it, from whoever they want it, including our government.
And I’m disappointed that Barack Obama supports the compromise. But I’m encouraged by this from his statement.
It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses.
Now, there is a tendency in the lefty blogosphere, which I have pointed out on numerous occasions, to miss the forest for whatever tree the lefty blogosphere happens to be obsessed over at the moment. Right now, that obsession has been FISA. I certainly hope this will not develop into such an instance, but I’m not encouraged.
I’m confident that such an outrage will not occur under an Obama Administration, and I feel pretty confident that as president, Barack will do what he says, which is to try to remove the immunity. I also feel that as far as Dickensian outrages go, this particular issue is pretty far down the totem pole, and I’m not going to let it cloud my support for Barack one iota. Not sure about the rest of the lefty sphere.
