blogger interrupted

One day, Liam Vessels will be shown this picture of the day he was born.  By then, it won’t be that big a deal that mere minutes after his birth, Liam’s dad took his picture with an iPhone, emailed it to his friend, who then posted it on the front page of daddy’s blog.  But one thing Liam may notice is that Daddy was wearing an Obama t-shirt.

So if this blog post of mine is still around then, Liam, allow me to explain.  Your daddy used to wear these Obama shirts every single day.  Every.  Single.  Day.  Because right around your birthday, Daddy went a bit ga-ga over President Obama’s first campaign for president.  He bought you those ridiculous Obama pajamas that you had to wear every day, too.  And that Obama rattler you hit your sister with, he bought that too.  It was all part of an endless stream of Obama schwag Daddy couldn’t resist purchasing constantly. 

Yeah, Daddy went kinda nuts.

A lot of us went kinda nuts over Barack Obama back during the year you were born, Liam.  And someday, when you’re old enough to read this and understand, you’ll probably have been embarrassed on a regular basis by the countless times Daddy showed everyone this picture, in your presence, despite you telling him to never do that again, ever, so help you God.  

But hopefully by then, President Obama will have changed your world to the point that it’s inconceivable that others would mock people like your Daddy for all the nuts-going he did that year.  You might understand why holding you close to him made this Obamamania make a little more sense.  

Liam, who knows if you’ll be a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or the founder of the American branch of the Monster Raving Loony Party.  It’s cool.  Just know, Liam, that surrounding you with Obama swag while you were unable to MAKE IT STOP was kind of about you, your future, and the America you would grow up in.  It was about hope, for you.  That time that Daddy met President Obama at some event and made President Obama sign the top of your bald head with a Sharpy?  Yeah…that was about hope, too.

Whether or not your first word is Obama, like this kid, just remember, this day was one of the happiest of Daddy’s life.  And if this YouTube is still around when you read this, I’m sure there’s a version of this video with you in it that embarrassed you among your friends, as well.  Welcome to the world, Liam.
